EL DORADILLO

A few km away, northwest from Puerto Madryn, we find the beach line of El Doradillo, facing the Golfo Nuevo.
The great steep slope of its shores allows an amazing approach of enormous animals (mostly females). Annually, the Southern Right Whale seeks the protection of the gulf waters –calm and with no current- for the gestation and birth of their calves.
In the mating process, females are harassed by many males, and its own inaccessibility serves as natural selection for the most capable male to end up copulating her. Once this is finalized, females try to get away from the harassment, heading towards the coast. There we may find them upside down, with their stomachs sticking out, in a denial position.
Because they are mammals and need to breathe air, they have to turn back around to breath. If this were to happen in deep waters, they could be copulated again. This is why El Doradillo is their natural shelter, because shallow waters avoid male’s attempts from underneath, and turning themselves facing the shore with their sexual organs frustrate any mating hopes.
This “technique” can also be seen from mothers, denying the calves their milk (they take around 200 liters per day). For these reasons, we may call El Doradillo a true LADIES WARD, which keeps them safe from males and calves nuisance. El Doradillo is a place that deserves to be known by the hand of an expert, in order to interpret this curious dynamic so hard to spot elsewhere in the world.
